Chapter Eleven

“What were you thinking?” Ms Dahl said in such a low voice that I had to strain to hear it. “Not only did you break into—”

“I didn’t break in anywhere. I walked into the publicly available business facility through the open front door.” Using a small lie and a big helping of luck but that was a tiny omission. Not that it mattered.

“Don’t. Interrupt.” The head’s eyes glowed with suppressed fury. “I don’t care how you got into the building. You entered a secure office without permission, then hacked into a computer to gain access to files that were none of your business.”

“I didn’t—” This time I caught myself, settling for shaking my head instead.

“What’s worse is that you did all of this while wearing the Ōtautahi Witching Academy uniform. The complainant was shocked that a school of our standing would enrol a student who behaved in such a way.”

I had to bite on the inside of my lips to keep from offering a thousand excuses. Judging from the harsh set of Ms Dahl’s face, she wouldn’t accept any of them.

“We’re not even halfway through the first week of school and you’ve broken into an office, attended an illegal party, and refused to demonstrate your magic in class.”

“I didn’t refuse.”

The headmistress drew back, fixing her gaze on me until I shifted with discomfort. “So, Professor Bulgar is lying?”

“I tried. My magic was gone.”

“Right. Just missing without any explanation.” She shook her head. “This is not a great start, Lucia.”

My hands curled into such tight fists that my short fingernails dug into the flesh of my palms. Heat rose in my face and a thousand retorts spun upon the tip of my tongue.

“Are you making friends?”

The change in tack caught me by surprise. “I guess.”

She arched an eyebrow. “The faculty are aware that your circumstances are not as opportune as many of our other students. Taking that into account, we’re prepared to make some allowances but take this as a warning that you’re severely testing that tolerance level.”

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.

“How are you getting on with your roommate?”

“Bree?” I switched my weight from one foot to the other. “Fine.” I tried to think of something nice to say about her. “She seems like a very diligent student.”

Ms Dahl surveyed me with her stern features for a long moment, then nodded her head—dismissed.

“I wouldn’t worry,” George said, appearing by my side. “I was in and out of trouble the whole time I attended the academy, but no one ever kicked me out.”

“What was your special skill?”

He wrinkled his nose. “Escaping.”

“Right.” I breathed a sigh of relief as I entered my room and found it empty. Bree must have gone to dinner already. “Is that a physical skill or a mental one?”

“Both.”

I sent him a sharp glance, wondering at the sudden reticence when he usually couldn’t keep his mouth shut. “Is that how you got out of the basement?”

“Yeah,” he admitted, scrunching up his face. “But don’t tell Carey, will you? I need to keep that particular card up my sleeve, just in case.
